Emotional coaching is a process that is used to help
people to resolve conflicting emotions thereby
increasing their level of emotional clarity,
awareness and intelligence.
As
repeatedly emphasized throughout this site, the
underlying causes of binge eating are unresolved
emotional conflicts. Our most immediate
interpretation of these conflicts is simply feeling
bad. And when we can't take it anymore we resort to
binge eating.
The
good news is that with the right approach it is
possible to gain insight from our painful feelings
and through it gain freedom from them. It is really
that simple. Knowing how we feel, instead of being
conflicted about it, gives us clarity about our
thoughts and feelings and those of others. Emotional
clarity enables us to persist on our chosen course
in life and to overcome any set backs without
resorting to emotional eating.
The
concept of emotional intelligence is now getting
wide recognition as a key factor to success in life.
Emotional intelligence is defined as: the ability to
perceive emotions, to access and generate emotions
so as to assist thought, to understand emotions and
emotional knowledge, and to reflectively regulate
emotions so as to promote emotional and intellectual
growth.
When
we don't understand how we feel, we don't know what
to do. And it is during these times that the
temptation to engage in an unproductive behaviour,
such as binge eating, asserts itself. Being unable
to rise above our emotions, through understanding
them, we opt for numbing our feelings.
Our
fundamental challenges in life are of emotional
nature. Whether it's a personal loss, a conflict or
chronic stress, these challenges are primarily
composed of painful feelings. Unresolved, they
attract more negativity and as a result paint a very
bleak picture of life for us.
When
life looks too bleak, we try to dull our feelings
through binge eating. The effects of our binge
eating efforts are temporary, and we continue to
engage in binge eating with increasing frequency.
The
spiral of more psychological pain and more binging
continues until we arrive to a point where binge
eating barely neutralizes the never ending pain. At
this point we loose all all hope for happiness.
Surprisingly, this outcome is very much like the
outcome experienced by people addicted to drugs.
They get to a point where they look toward the next
fix as the only highlight of their existence, yet
the promise of permanent relief never materializes.
This
low point does not have to be reached in order for
us to reverse our emotional course. With emotional
coaching you can learn to understand your feelings
and thereby free yourself from their negative
influences. Almost literally, negative feelings
evaporate as soon as they are understood. And to the
degree that emotional understanding increases, the
need to binge diminishes.
As
your emotional coach I would like to share with you
an overview of the basic principles that we will be
using in our coaching sessions as well their real
time online format. This information is contained on
the next page.
