It is common for people whose binge eating has
acquired the character of a long standing habit to
reduce the amount of physical activity to
dangerously low levels.
It can
be very difficult to get oneself moving again when
chronic negative emotions continually suggest the
easy way out: numbing the pain with food. However, a
passive approach does not work when it comes to
overcoming the emotional roots of binge eating.
In
addition to working with feelings directly, through
emotional coaching, a very effective method of
improving how we feel is exercising.
By
gently increasing the amount of your physical
activity you will improve your physical and
emotional health simultaneously. Improved
circulation alone will enable you to feel and think
more clearly.
Exercising does not have to be complicated. In
fact all you have to do, in order to begin your exercise
program, is start walking. Other forms of gentle
exercising include free-weights muscle strengthening
and Yoga.
These
three exercise methods, walking, free-weights and
Yoga, are basic recommendations for people with
a binge eating challenge. The following pages outline
the benefits of each type of exercise and provide
recommendations for a workout schedule.
