Accept Yourself
Now, read that again, and take it to heart! You may be in less than optimum shape. You may have low level of flexibility. You may have difficulties sitting still for 5 minutes. This is OK. The key to change is self acceptance. Yoga allows us to observe ourselves in new ways. By observing and accepting what we see, we change. Let your Yoga practice be a place where you don't punish yourself. Allow yourself to be and as a result make positive changes naturally and with greater ease.

Find a Qualified Instructor
This is particularly important if you currently have no experience with Yoga. Although it is possible to do Yoga by following a book or video presentation, close supervision from a Yoga teacher will ensure an injury free introduction to your practice. As you gain practical experience and become attuned to your body, you will become increasingly self reliant in your practice. In the beginning, however, there is no need to be brave. It is OK to ask for help, in spite of the cultural conditioning to always be autonomous.

Prepare Your Body
To prevent unnecessary internal stress, it is recommended to do your practice 2 hours before or after a meal. Also, remember to empty your bladder shortly before the practice.

Practice Regularly
Practice at least 15 to 20 minutes, daily. Regular practice will maintain your flexibility and ensure a steady progress in your ability to do poses.

Be Gentle With Yourself
To avoid injury, do not force your body into any pose, beyond its capacity. If an exercise causes you pain, stop and consult with your teacher about it. Depending on the kind of pain you experience, you may be instructed to do a simpler pose or to rest briefly and then continue with the same pose.
